There is a close affiliation between mobilizing volunteers and social media. These two systems should be naturally aligned. Doing some prior planning and having a structure for incorporating volunteers--when they are ready to volunteer is a key element. You may have a small standing group of people, but they should be seen as a cadre to help organize and direct new resources when they show up. New leaders will emerge as volunteers arrive. The talent pool may be incredibly deep for the event itself.
