I grew up in a smallish (25,000) town in Northern Illinois called Freeport. Every day at noon the siren would go off. It was primarily used for tornado warning, but the noon blast was a reminder of lunch time and that it was still working.

This story on the mother of all sirens caught my attention. There are certainly newer generation sirens that can be tailored for more than a loud wailing. They have voice capability and can be tuned to be directional.

I'm betting that there are still plenty of the old sirens in operation all over the country. I'm not advocating that social media tools replace these systems because we need redundancy and my 93 year old mother who still lives in Freeport is not on Twitter.
