"Why You Could Be in a Flood Zone" is a current Business Week story (shared by Garry Briese, formerly with ICF) about the risks of flooding and where and why to buy flood insurance. Insurance is the poor man's risk management solution. Sometimes "you are where you are" and you're not going to move. When in that predicament and in a hazard zone insurance is one way to mitigate your risks. Flooding is one of the most common hazards in our nation and hopefully the community where you live is participating in National Flood Insurance Program.

King County Washington, the jurisdiction I'm most familiar with, spent much time and effort on their flood program. To the point where residents get 40% off the cost of their flood insurance policies because of the good work done by the county to eliminate as many risks as possible.

One of the many predictions about climate change is that flood events will be come more frequent and more significant. So, you can build an ark, buy flood insurance, or take the risk.
