I suppose that sandbags like moss (you should see my lawn this time of year) will never go away. We will be filling and un-filling them for decades to come. There will probably always be an application for sandbags, be they for fighting emplacements during war (I've seen Kevlar sandbags) or for what we use them for--flood control.

There is emerging a whole new class of flood fighting and water control measures. U.S. Flood Control Corporation has one tubular version. There are many other types to choose from. A town north of where I live tried out a "curtain" system the last time flooding threatened the downtown area.

The one good thing about sandbagging in larger events is the community spirit it engenders. People from all walks of life and society join together for a common purpose. It might be the one thing that unites people who would typically just argue with one another about---everything and anything. Having a contractor or your public works come in and erect one of the newer systems does not have the same impact.

Our experience on the Red River shows that no single solution works in all situations. We have adopted a combination of earthen dikes, sandbags and water tube flood barriers as our deployable flood fighting tactics.
