Residents Complacent--Darwin Awards Pending
May 29, 2008

This story on a recent poll taken in hurricane prone states shows that emergency managers will not be out of a job anytime soon. I ask myself why...but then...I... Ugh! Darwin awards will be forthcoming if we have a hurricane season that is anything like the tornado season we are currently experiencing.

Some folks in this area of the country did not agree with my efforts to use mass media (television, radio and the Internet) as a public education tool when I was with King County, but given the results of this Mason-Dixon Poll Finds Residents Complacent it reaffirms to me that we need more of this type of effort in order to reach people with good information.

They may choose not to follow it, but they should at least get the facts right.

Thanks to Tanja Fransen for sharing this "discouraging" information.
