I'm a fan of NOAA Weather Radios. Here in Washington State the Governor has proclaimed September NOAA Weather Radio Month. The link provided will take you to the Washington State EMD web site which has been much improved over the past year or so.

Here in Washington Emergency Alert System (EAS) messages are transmitted over these tone alert radios. When I was in King County we were able to leverage a FEMA grant to put a radio in every school in unincorporated areas of the county and school district offices in other parts of the county. There are over 600 K-12 schools in King County alone.

If you are active in a PTA this is a great project to support. Check to see if your school has a radio and if not, make it a project to have one purchased and installed. I highlight installed since there are lots of instances where people take action to purchase a piece of equipment, but then don't put it into service.

So don't be in the "Duh" category on that one!
