Earlier this week I was writing about the huge growth in elder care businesses and agencies that are focusing on the aging boomer generation and their needs.

Another aspect of "the future" is that people are going to try to stay independent for as long as possible.  This means they will be in their homes and will have mechanical and electrical medical aids to take care of their needs.  These devices will typically need electrical power to make them function.

I think we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg when it comes to individuals being impacted by the loss of electricity during disasters and needing assistance for their medical needs.  With this in mind, it appears that the FDA has come up with a form to help individuals plan for disasters.  It includes:

  • Developing contact lists for family and providers
  • Emergency phone numbers
  • An inventory of devices that need power
  • An assessment of how dependent one is on these devices
  • Other planning elements
