Deadlines vary according to program areas. Applications are due at the Akron Community Foundation, 345 West Cedar Street, Akron, OH 44307-2407 by 4 p.m. on the following dates for categories as specified. Should the deadline fall on a holiday or weekend, applications are due the preceding business day. Arts and Culture grant applications are due April 1; Civic Affairs grant applications are due July 1; Health and Human Services applications are due October 1, and Education grant applications are due January 2. The Board of Trustees meets quarterly.
Akron Community Foundation is a $142.8 million philanthropic endowment with a growing family of more than 300 affiliate funds. Akron Community Foundation's special-focus funds are important to enriching the lives of people within the diverse groups in the greater Akron community. The funds are permanent endowments from which grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations that concentrate on specific fields of interest. Akron Community Foundation's Community Fund derives flexibility from its unrestricted nature. The Foundation can draw from this fund to respond to the changing needs of the community in the areas of: (1) arts & culture; (2) civic affairs; (3) health & human services; and (4) education. Civic Affairs: In this category, the foundation is interested in programs relating to business and employment; civic affairs and community service, such as fire departments, voter groups, community planning; consumer interests; crime and law enforcement as well as crime prevention; environment and energy programs; equal rights programs; recreation which includes, parks, zoos, athletic organizations, camps and boy and girl clubs; neighborhood associations and urban development. Recent grants in the area of civic affairs have supported local non-profit organization to carry out such projects as: park construction; video conferencing technology; on-site educational programming and parenting support for the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority; educational exhibits and artwork installation; theatrical programming; Junior Ranger Day Camp; home repairs for low-income senior, working-poor and disabled homeowners; database creation; support to at-risk teens; financial literacy and entrepreneurship training; tennis equipment and court time; training, workshops and community relations activities; upgrade to digital technology; and to develop a multi-sensory room for children with special needs. The Foundation's grant award for the city of Akron's Neighborhood Partnership Program is drawn from the Akron Community Foundations Community Fund as well. Other foundation funds include the following: (1) Gay Community Endowment Fund; (2) Hudson Public Schools Fund; (3) Medina County Community Fund; (4) Medina County Women's Endowment Fund; (5) Millennium Fund for Children; (6) Vernon L. Odom Fund; and (6) the Women's Endowment Fund.
In 1955, a $1 million bequest from the estate of Edwin Shaw established the foundation, which works to improve the quality of life in Greater Akron. To date, the foundation and its affiliate funds have awarded more than $67 million in grants to qualified nonprofit organizations.
