Arizona’s controversial immigration law went into effect on Thursday, July 29, but a federal judge blocked key provisions of SB 1070, including the requirement that police check the immigration status of suspected illegal immigrants. Mexico is also preparing for the bill’s effects; the state of Sonora increased security in several border towns to respond to “mass deportation of our countrymen,” according to The Christian Science Monitor.
