Authors Urge Mental Health Parity in Disaster Response

In addition to their effects on survivors’ physical health, disasters also impact their mental health. While progress has been made in addressing the impacts of disasters on survivors’ mental health, an article in The New England Journal of Medicine urges for more to be done. Among their recommendations, the article’s authors encourage increased co-location of mental and physical health practitioners and greater investment in standardization of mental health surveillance models. The authors suggest meeting these challenges will require making mental health response part of jurisdictions’ general disaster response capabilities. But they could also reduce the societal effects of disasters, such as closed factories and social unrest.
