A group of lawmakers is pushing for a new system to replace E-Verify as the database employers use to check whether or not their employees are in the country legally. The New Employee Verification Act, sponsored by Reps. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) and Sam Johnson (R-TX), would require running prospective employees’ names through more federal databases and would encourage background checks. The proposal, introduced two years ago, is getting renewed interest after a report commissioned by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security recently found that E-Verify fails to identify a significant number of illegal immigrants who slip through the system using false documents, The Arizona Republic reported.
