Background checks for residents seeking to work and receive benefits in Fayette County, Ga., present county officials with an “administrative nightmare,” County Commissioner Eric Maxwell told the Fayette County News. The action is required by changes made last year to the Georgia Security and Immigration Compliance Act. Under the changes, workers must fill out a form stating that they are legally in the United States, which the county must verify by querying a federal database and paying subscription and transaction fees. The county’s finance director said noncompliance with the requirement could also slow down county projects.
