A new report released by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center makes several recommendations for hospitals to improve their response to disasters and public health emergencies. The report, The Next Challenge in Healthcare Preparedness: Catastrophic Health Events, was released March 5, by the UPMC Center for Bio-Security. The report recommends hospitals in particular regions work collaboratively to respond to disasters and public health emergencies, establish means to share health-care information and resources during an emergency, and figure out how to use “alternative” private-sector resources to transport patients.
