The New York City Fire Department is taking heat over glitches in a new unified call taking system employed by dispatchers to route firefighters to fires. The most recent instance occurred on Nov. 8th when a fire engine at a station two blocks from a blaze in the Queens neighborhood of Woodside was routed in the opposite direction due to a 911 operator’s error. Errors like this led Uniformed Fire Officers Association President Alexander Hagan to call for the adoption of 711 as a separate number for residents to call for fire emergencies in New York City, according to the Scientific American.
