Hilton Head Island, S.C., officials want some publicly available operations records and incident reports to require the inclusion of first responders’ names. In a letter to state Rep. Leon Howard, Hilton Head Island Mayor Tom Peeples argued that including responders’ names in the public records would increase accountability and local governance of emergency medical services, The State reported. Under current law, Peeples wrote, results of local investigations into misconduct are withheld from the public until the state completes its investigation, which is an undue delay, he argued.

A version of the bill that would open access to incident reports and other operational EMS data was passed by the Senate last month. The House has yet to hold a hearing on it.
