Snowmageddon Fuels Surge in Emergency Notification Subscriptions

Colleges and universities in the northeast saw a surge in emergency notification subscriptions leading up to the storm that dumped up to 40 inches of snow on parts of the East Coast. For example, Penn State added 6,000 subscribers to its list of 65,000 subscribers a short time before the storm.

The university also posted notifications of delayed and canceled classes to its Facebook and Twitter accounts, eliciting feedback from students, Annemarie Mountz, assistant director of public information at the university, told Campus Technology.
