Public safety answering points should adopt syndromic surveillance software to aid the detection of pandemics, wrote Bob Smith, director of strategic development for the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials International, in an article for FireRescue1. According to Smith, computer aided dispatch software can be purchased with a function that analyzes the volume of a certain type of call during a given period. The software then alerts the appropriate authorities once a certain threshold is met so pandemic response procedures can be put into motion.
